GeoGebra Manual:Village Pump/Infobox

From GeoGebra Manual
Jump to: navigation, search

At the moment the tool / command pages occupy much vertical but little horizontal space because various info-boxes take a lot of space. As a consequence users have to scroll a bit at the moment before the real documentation starts which makes the navigation throughout the website unncessary complicated.

A potential solution to this problem is the usage of infoboxes similar to those [[wikipedia:Template:Infobox|Wikipedia uses]. This page is intended for discussions about the required content which should appear in those and the internal structure of those infoboxes in order to make them easy to maintain.

I am currently experimenting with infoboxes, therefore many page may appear to be broken as they were not yet customized to work with my changes. --Florian Sonner 12:28, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Initial Discussions

The tool / command list from the user guide in the old wiki is cool, we should also add this for the public pages of tools / commands. One can probably automate this by listing all pages from the category "Tools" or "Commands", it will involve some scripting, but that's worth the effort to my mind. --Florian Sonner 16:52, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

On Segment Tool one has to scroll the whole screen down before getting most relevant info. Maybe Tool template should be somewhat similar to Command template from the old wiki -- contain some navigation (not all tools, bu links like "Category:tools","Line tools",...) and be right-aligned. --Kondr 20:08, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

I also meant this with my idea above. I experimented a bit with the Segment Tool page (and changed some global templates for that, therefore many pages seem to be broken) and came to the conclusion that we probably need to put almost everything into a single infobox to make the website consistent (and avoid HTML problems). --Florian Sonner 12:28, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

The official tool/command template should contain version for which this was created, so if the page is i.e 3.2 in your languege, you immediately know you should check English version for 4.0. --Kondr 20:10, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Also something we could easily add to the infobox, have a look at my recent efforts in Template:Tool --Florian Sonner 12:28, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Infobox content

Initial question: If we add infoboxes what should they contain?

In general: Infoboxes should not contain a complete documentation, but only the most general information and a kind of navigation system so that users can easily skim through available tools/commands (something missing altogether at the moment, tool/command pages are dead-ends so to say). --Florian Sonner 12:28, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Tools

  • Tool icon
  • Tool title (redudant, but it's nice to have everything in view at once)
  • A link to the general tool manual page
  • A list with tools -- or maybe just a list with tool categories (similar to the current solution in the manual)? The tool categories also have to be maintained somehow. A link to the tool category (like "All Tsools") as well.
  • Links to alternative versions of that command in other variants of the same language (needed for a distinction between e.g. BE and AE, currently implemented using Template:Alternate Language).

Commands

  • Command title
  • A link to the general command manual page
  • A list with commands (see above).
  • Links to alternative versions of that command in other language variants (see above).
