2011 Annual Report

1. Training and Support Members of the Cyprus Geogebra Institute are involved at delivering undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University of Cyprus and the University of Nicosia, related to Dynamic Geometry and Geogebra in particular. Specifically, the following courses are offered: • Integrating New Technological Tools in the Teaching of Mathematics • Using Technology in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics • Problem Solving for Elementary School Teachers

The Institute also supports teachers in using the software and in integrating Geogebra in their day-to-day practice. In conjunction to the Greek version of the inetrnationalGeogebra website, a local website of the Cyprus GI has been established, aiming at facilitating teachers’ use of Geogebra. Further, in collaboration with the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, two seminars for teacher professional development are provided to elementary and secondary school teachers, namely: • An introduction to Geogebra • Using Geogebra in Mathematical Problem Solving and Modeling

2. Development and Sharing A set of 40 Geogebra applets have been translated and modified from English to Greek. These applets focus on concepts from geometry, measurement, and number sense. This work will be available from our local website, along with suggestions on integrating the Geogebra applets in mathematics lessons.

3. Research and Collaboration Geogebra has been used in two research projects in Cyprus and in one FP7 project. In these projects Cyprus GI members have collaborated with researchers from Israel, Australia and eight European countries.

4. Outreach Seminars and workshops for teachers have been provided.

5. Publications • Contribution to the new international GeoGebra book. • Paper on the use of technological tools in mathematical problem solving and modeling has been presented at the Cyprus Mathematical Society Annual Meeting and Conference (in Greek). • Discussion group on the use of technology in mathematics has been organized and coordinated at the Panhellenic Conference of the Researchers of Mathematics Education (in Greek).
