Keynotes

  • Zsolt Lavicza, Director of Research and Development at the International GeoGebra Institute, Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, UK: GeoGebra Community

GeoGebra www.geogebra.org is a free, multi-platform dynamic mathematics software for all levels of education that brings together geometry, algebra, spreadsheet, graphing, statistics and calculus in one easy-to-use package. Learning resources developed using GeoGebra can be saved, and shared on www.geogebra.org. Teachers and students can search a database of over 25 000 materials (and growing) to support their learning needs, or they can use the GeoGebra software itself to explore open-ended tasks and make original constructions use and share with others. GeoGebra is a rapidly expanding community of 20 million users located in 190 countries. In some countries GeoGebra is fully integrated into the national curriculum and exams structure. GeoGebra maintains 140 GeoGebra Institutes in 75 countries providing a global network for teacher education and STEM education research and development. GeoGebra is the leading worldwide provider of dynamic mathematics software, supporting STEM education and innovations in teaching and learning. GeoGebra has received numerous educational software awards, building on successive innovations through collaboration with key partners like Microsoft. In the presentation I will outline current development in the GeoGebra community worldwide.

A common GeoGebra user easily identified that GeoGebra based worksheets can easily promote, student’s activities, multiple representation of mathematical content and experimental and guide approach of learning. So, the question – is an innovative integration of GeoGebra in Mathematics curriculum can support the learning of Mathematics in Children’s own learning style? Even though GeoGebra can influence what is taught, teachers need to be mindful of designing instruction and environments that promote these content and learning framework. In fact, GeoGebra supports learning requirements when it is used “as a tool for processing the concepts with investigations and problem solving”. GeoGebra can also be seen as catalysts for a paradigm shift. Since printed material and books became readily accessible, education has experienced a gradual shift away from the idea that its success relies on the student’s capacity to memorize and accurately recall large amounts of information. Instead, greater emphasis has been placed on developing research and problem-solving skills. In recent years, with emerging information and communication technologies (ICTs), the pressure has rapidly mounted to shift our views on effective teaching and learning even further. Emphasis is now placed on equipping students with effective inquiry skills, including the ability to find and process new information using digital technologies. Many educators are now seeing GeoGebra, with their interconnectedness, as environments, rather than just tools, for learning and teaching. The difference between these two perspectives is significant, the former requiring a fundamental change in teaching practice for many teachers. We should envision the road map to achieve this target of GeoGebra enabled Mathematics curriculum. What could be the hurdles and what type of efforts would give us a quality impact for Mathematics community?
