Note: If you are interested in GeoGebra translation, please read Translation GUI first.

This document describes changes in the GeoGebra properties files (needed for the Graphical User Interface of GeoGebra) from version 3.2 to version 4.0. Thank you very much for supporting GeoGebra and making it available in your local language! This article lists changes that are not marked in the translation tool (Attesoro).

Updated Commands

The following commands have been enhanced, so please update the syntax in your language accordingly:

Syy, SigmaYY, Corner, Extremum, Intersect, Tangent, Normal, Vertex, Integral
Product, Sequence, Rotate, Dilate, Reflect, Length, Sequence, Text, Midpoint
Histogram, Tangent, Simplify, Perimeter, Point, Element, Max, Min

These changes are not highlighted in Attesoro.

We’ve added a new command Ordinal[ <Number> ] which returns eg “1st”, “2nd”, “3rd” as numbers in English. Please test this command in your own language with GeoGebra 4 Beta and if it doesn’t work, just let us know at translation@geogebra.org.

Capitalization of Menu Items and Tool Names

In the English version (for GeoGebra 3.2 in 2009) we changed the capitalization of menu items and tool names to make them easier to read (e.g., "Print Preview" instead of "Print preview", "Line through Two Points" instead of "Line through two points"). You might want to change this in your language too (if applicable), but you don't have to change it.

Attesoro does not show these changes (not highlighted!), so if you want to adapt your translation accordingly, you will need to work through all items in the menu.properties and plain.properties files and search for capital letters in the English terms.

Syntax and Arguments of Commands

In the command.properties (for GeoGebra 3.2 in 2009) file we have revised the arguments in the syntax of some commands to make them more easy to understand for novice users (e.g., "Ellipse[ <Focal Point>, <Focal Point>, <Principal Axis Length> ]" instead of "Ellipse[ <Point>, <Point>, <Number> ]")

Again, this is optional for your translation and is not highlighted in Attesoro. If you want to adapt your translation accordingly, you will need to work through all items in the command.properties file and update the arguments if necessary.

In addition, we have tried to simplify the syntax help text for certain tools that had many syntax options before (e.g., instead of having Angle[<Number>], Angle[<Vector>], Angle[<Point>],... we now have only Angle[<Object>]). This makes the command syntax help shorter and easier to read. In the manual we will point this out and list all objects that can be used with the corresponding command.

Distance Tool and Overlined Text

The Distance tool creates text like \overline{AB} = 5 using an overline. Depending on your local preferences, you have the option to change this notation by specifying LaTeX text. However, please be very careful when you change this. If you don't know LaTeX, ask somebody who does to help you. Here are your options:

  • %0+%1+" \\, = \\, "+%2 produces AB = 5
  • "\left|"+%0+%1+"\right| \\, = \\, "+%2 produces \left|AB\right| = 5
  • "\overline{"+%0+%1+"} \\, = \\, "+%2 produces \overline{AB} = 5
Note: In the last case you can just omit translation of the key -- English version will be used.
