Parameters are often used in functions like f(x)=a*x² to explore the influence of a parameter. To use a parameter you need to define it, in this case a, before you define the function. If you don't do that the function won't be accepted. The parameter a can be a simple number (enter at input-line something like a=2) or a slider (nothing more than a visible free number)
