Thank you for your interest in translating GeoGebra (www.geogebra.org) to your language!

Starting with GeoGebra 4.0, the GeoGebra Help document is written in the Wiki. Address of this wiki is http://wiki.geogebra.org/en

Translating to a new language

  1. If you are joining a team that already started the translation, skip to step 5.
  2. Make sure all the GeoGebra GUI is fully translated as well as the wiki Category (see Translation:GUI for details).
  3. Send a mail to support@geogebra.org saying which language you want to write the wiki in.
  4. Your request will be processed and a new wiki will be started.
  5. Follow instructions for existing language

Translating into an existing language

  1. Make sure you have a GeoGebra account.
  2. Send your username to translation@geogebra.org together with your real name and language(s) you want to translate to.
  3. Go to the Category:Awaiting translation page in your wiki. You will see the list of pages that need to be translated.
  4. Pick one of them. (Click the links to get to the pages).
  5. On each page you see a text (saying it's not translated yet), including a link to the corresponding page in the english wiki. Shift+click the link to the English version to open it in a new window.
  6. Go back to the page in your language and click the edit link. In the edit area you will typically see something like
    <includeonly></includeonly>
    geometry

    Don't edit these lines!
Write your translation below these lines. To see how the formatting was done in the English version, you can go back to the English page and click "view source" on the top left. You can copy parts of the code that appears, but don't copy the first two lines: these are already present in your translation and are slightly different for each language. If there already is a GeoGebra 3.0/3.2 Help in your language, you can have a look at the text there to help you with your translation.
  7. Make sure that the links in your language work! If a link goes to an existing page, it gets blue, if there is no existing page for it, the link turns red. Equivalents of all English pages should be present in the wiki, so red links probably mean you have made a mistake. If you think you haven't, please contact translation@geogebra.org to create the missing pages for you.
  8. If your translation is complete, remove the ... line.

For this translation you need to use wiki syntax. The most important parts are:

  • ==SOME TEXT== to make SOME TEXT heading
  • Link or Link text to make a link. If Link text is specified, it defines what phrase will form the clickable link, while Link is the name of the linked page.
  • Link text to make a link to English Wikipedia, Link text to make a link to French wikipedia (replace fr with your language code to link to your version of Wikipedia). Link is the page name of the linked wikipedia page, not the URL.
  • consecutive lines starting with * to make unordered (bullet) list
  • some text, some text, some text, some text to write examples, notes, hints and warnings. Don't translate the "note", "example" etc, they are templates and translated automatically!) If you need to put Symbols like = into a some text then you have to type 1= in frot of it, like that:
  • e.g. Ctrl+Shift+S to make nice keyboard shortcut.

See Help:Contents and Project:HowTo for details.

In case you want to add more details to the translation, you may use the "Comments" section below the article. See Project:Structure for details.

If you want to create a link to GeoGebra materials in a special language (eg: swedish), you have to add languages=<language code> after the actual link (eg: a link to swedish articles would look like that: http://www.geogebra.org/tags/article?languages=sv)

Tools

You can find some tools at github which try to help with translation and keeping the translation updated.

Thank you for your work and support of GeoGebra!
