GeoGebra Institute South Africa: 2010 Report

The number of GeoGebra users in South Africa is growing fast. Many other universities and teachers in their classrooms are using GeoGebra on a daily basis. We have a website http://school-maths.com/geogebra_institute/index.html and GeoGebra Manuals based on the South African curriculum can be downloaded from this website. In fact, a total number of downloads from this website are:
• Stols, G.H. (2009). GeoGebra in 10 Lessons, Open access internet publication. Downloads from June 2010 to October 2010: 11 203.
• Barnard, B. & Stols, G. (2009). Investigating Geometry using GeoGebra. Open access internet publication. Downloads from June 2010 to October 2010: 5518.

At the University of Pretoria all second year pre-service mathematics (170 in 2010) teachers do a GeoGebra course as part of their training. All the ACE in-service teachers (70) received memory sticks with GeoGebra preloaded on it and the other (130) received GeoGebra on a CD. Gerrit Stols also conducted a workshop for 1st year engineering students (geometric thinking & GeoGebra).

GeoGebra is also used at the AIMSSEC mathematics teachers contact sessions. Barrie Barnard developed two study manuals for these training sessions:
• Investigating Geometry Using GeoGebra.
• Investigating the effect of changing parameters of functions using Geogebra.
He also conducted a GeoGebra course (28 June to 8 July) for 95 teachers at Stellenbosch High School.

The University of the Witwatersrand is also using GeoGebra in some of the teacher training courses.
